Hormones and neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that our bodies rely on to function- they are the way in which our cells communicate with eachother and influence many different processes throughout our bodies.
Here we'll explore four neurotransmitters and hormones that play a role in pleasant, more sought after emotions. And potential ways that we can hack their release for maximum mood and motivation benefit 🤩
They are
• Dopamine
• Serotonin
• Oxytocin
• Endorphins
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which is responsible for allowing us to feel pleasure, satisfaction and motivation. The satisfied feeling we get when we accomplish a task?- that's a surge of dopamine in the brain. So keeping a simple to-do list is a simple way to hack this one. Prioritising sleep is an important way to ensure sufficient levels of dopamine; hours + is recommended. Meditation is also a way to release this neurotransmitter.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which regulates our moods. When serotonin is at regular levels, we feel more focused, emotionally stable, happier and calmer. Effective ways to hack this one?- just getting out and in the sunlight; as well as prioritising exercise and taking a cold shower 🙌
Oxytocin is a hormone which is linked to feelings of bonding. Research has linked it to lower stress and anxiety and it also plays a role in regulating our emotional responses and pro-social behaviours- trust, empathy, processing of bonding cues and positive communication. Ways to promote the release of this hormone include cuddling pets, getting a massage and spending time with loved ones.
Endorphins are hormones that your body releases when it feels pain or stress. They help reduce stress, relieve pain and improve your sense of wellbeing. Endorphins are released when we laugh or cry, with regular exercise or when we create music or art.
